SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Two People Killed And Countless Injured In A Deadly Clash Between Hiyalla and Haforiere Communities Of Eastern Equatoria State




Hiyalla and Haforiere Communities of Eastern Equatoria State clashed today resulting in the lost of lives and countless injured.

A six year old child was severely wounded and two other people as the result of the deadly clash. 

Hiyalla Payam Paramount Chief Mr. Ohide Galileo spoke to the media confirming the incident saying the clashes lasted for two days.

“An incident happened yesterday (Wednesday), and there was tension since the day before yesterday. Some goats were stolen from Hiyalla which prompted the owners of the goats to get annoyed and they went and killed a young boy from Haforiere. The youths of Haforiere ran to arrest the culprit the fell in an ambush," Mr. Ohide Said.

He further said that, "They clashed from yesterday until evening, and the whole night, they patrolled up to this morning. Two people died all from Haforiere, two injured, one from Hiyalla called Olimoi and one from Haforiere, a very young boy."

Torit County Commissioner Mr. Albano Jacob blamed the two communities for failing to live in harmony. 

“The government has tried its level best, last time we sent a team to calm the situation on the ground but after the government left, they went back to the same things,” he complained.

Torit County is an administrative region in Eastern Equatoria of South Sudan, with headquarters in the town of Torit, which is also the state capital.
