SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Ex-Ministers In Jonglei State Threatens To Sue The Government Over Unpaid 9,221,000 SSP Arrears

Former State Ministers Of Jonglei State threatened to take the government to court over unpaid salary arrears totalling to the sum of 9,221,000 SSP.

The former officials are namely: Peter Gatkuoth former Minister of Sports, Biar Mading former Minister of Labour, Tuong Majok former Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Elijah Mabor Bol former Minister of Land and Lual Monyluak former Minister of Education. They were both dismissed from work on August 2022. 

Peter Gatkuoth spoke to Radiotamazuj they are left with no other options rather than the government to the Court.

“Since our dismissal, we have been trying to meet the deputy governor, who happened to be our SPLM party chairperson in the state, but nothing happened. This made us complain to the state legal administration office, which now owes us a response,” Gatkuoth said. “We worked for five months, so we believe our salaries are our rights.”- Peter Gatkuoth. 

 He added, “Initially, we really wanted this issue handled administratively, but they ignored it. So, our point is that we have families to care for and rights in this country. For February, March, and April, we were to receive 475,000 SSP each and 209,600 SSP for each of us for the remaining two months because of cuts. So, we will take this to court. It is our right.”

Tuong Majok one of the complainant said that: “there are a lot of ongoing issues in our state, but we chose to talk about salaries because it is our right. The state has money but does not want to pay salary arrears. We complained while in government only to end up being fired.”- Tuong Majok. 

The current Jonglei State Information Minister Hon. Samuel Manyuon said that 

“What I know there were, of course, five ministers fired on 6 August. These ministers, I am sure we paid except for March and April, which even myself I have not received and the ministry of finance was directed to clear them up,”-John Manyuon.
