SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Upper Nile University Lecturers On Strike.

The staffs of Upper Nile University are on indefinite strike begining this morning over the delay of the newly adjusted salary structure.

Yearly the staffs of Upper Nile University, mostly complain or strike over salary delay or sometimes over salary structure. 

Dr. Pio Kur Deng, the Staff Association chairman confirmed the indefinite strike during a recently held staff meeting.

The meeting that was held by the staffs of Upper Nile University discussed the delayed adjustment of the salary. 

New salary scale structure and immediate payment of annual always was the main talking pint of the meeting. 

“we are going for our indefinite industrial action from today, just to speed up the process for the adjustment of our salary, it’s not only the adjustment of the salary because we have also demanded the annual tickets,”-Dr.Pio Kur Deng. 

Government said it is ready to protect it's citizens

He further said that: “on 19TH July 2019, it (increased salary) was approved together with the current salary which we are receiving now, but we don’t receive it since 2019.”

He said that: “so for these two reasons we are demanding for our government to speed up the process of the adjustment of the salary based on the current of the central bank rate.”- Dr. Pio Pur.

A circular was released to the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology demanding an improved allowances and medical cover by the Public Universities in South Sudan.
