SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

President Kiir Commits To Eradicating Malaria In South Sudan

 





President Kiir today met with national health minister Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng to sign Malaria campaign officially in south Sudan. 

The initiative was spear headed by the Ministry of Heath and the stake holders last year November. 

President Kiir commitment to end Malaria related deaths, the president signed on the campaign banner under the theme: "Zero Malaria In South Sudan Starts With Me" 

The campaign will be targeting vulnerable civilians, children under the age of 5, pregnant woman and the elderly as well. 

On another note the National Health Minister Hon. Yolanda noted the drop in COVID-19  related cases. She also encourages the public to seek vaccination for those not vaccinated. 

The Health Minister who is also the Chairperson of  Africa Ebola Task Force and Emergency Preparedness assured the nation that the Ministry and the government is well equipped to prevent Ebola outbreak. 

Additionally, the Minister briefed the President on the general health situation in the Country including her recent visit to several States for a feasibility study and assessment of primary health care facilities that were destroyed by floods. She also noted the impact created by the withdrawal of Health Pooled Fund( International partner that was providing services to citizens since 2011).

PAY ATTENTION: Malaria is endemic across South Sudan. It is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality by a significant margin, placing 100% of the population at risk.
