SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Juba Police Have Arrested 44 Gang Members


Juba Police have arrested a total number of 44 notorious gang members after clashing in Juba leaving two people dead.

General Majok Daniel the police spokeperson said that the police officers were swift in apprehending the notorious gang.

“There were issues related to these young gangsters. They were involved in some insecurities where they used to fight each other. In Hai Kosti, they fought, and as a result, one boy was killed, and the same thing happened at Lologo, they fought, and one boy was also killed,” Majok said. 

Two members of the gang were killed and they planned to revenge their fallen member but their plan of the revenge fail when the police was notified by some civilians.

 “We managed to arrest 44 in total, 42 were members of a group called Wrong Gang, and they were fighting a group called Soldier Boys. There are many groups; there are Lock World, Rich Gang, and Star Boys. These are the groups we have already identified, and we know their places, but during this operation, we managed to arrest these 44 people. The investigation has now started, and now we are about to finish it,” Majok said. 

Knives, crude weapons, lighters, clubs studded with nails was captured by the police before the youths use it to fight. 

Gen. Justin appealed to parents to take good care of their children and prevent them from being involved in criminality.

The Police spokesperson is appealing to the parents to also care and support their children inorder to prevent them into becoming hardened criminals. 

“We are appealing to parents to play their roles. It is a very serious matter and some families do not know what their children are doing and they need to monitor them very closely,” he said. “We (police) have to complement each other with families because they are responsible when the children are at home, but when they are out on the streets; we (police) will take the responsibility.” Majok said. 

This is not the first time the Juba police arrested gang members. Last year, police carried out a similar raid in which nearly 60 gang members were arrested.
