SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Yirol West County Chief Brutally Assaulted By Police Officers

A local chief was brutally beaten while he was in Maburzeet prison and investigation is currently on going said a local official of Yirol West County. 

Andrew Madut Buoi is the name of the assaulted chief. The chief was accused of illegally logging mahogany trees and was tortured upon arrival at the notorious Maburzeet Detention by policemen. 

Acting governor of Lakes State said that: “The information we got from the ground confirmed that  Chief Andrew Madut Buoi has been tortured by the soldiers in Maburzeet,” he said. “I immediately ordered an investigation into the cause of his torture and it is the investigation that will tell us the reason for his torture by the soldiers.”


The governor further regrets the torturing of the chief and called for thorough investigation. 

Meanwhile, the clinical officer in charge of Yirol Hospital, Angelina Adut Agol, confirmed that the chief was brutally tortured and is admitted to the health facility.

The clinical officer further said that, the chief had bruises and wounds all over his body. 

“He was unconscious when he was brought to Yirol Hospital. We put him on normal saline and gave him some injections. We were worried about his organs and internal bleeding so we scanned all his organs this morning (Monday) and they are normal,” she said. “No organ was damaged during the beating but he sustained serious wounds on the face and other parts of his body.”- Clinical officer. 

The clinician further said that the chief is likely to be discharged on Tuesday so as he can continue with medication at home. 

Makur Madut Buoi, the son of the Assaulted chief said that his further is now in stable condition despite having a serious injury to the right eye. 

“My father was summoned to Yirol West County while he was in Pagarau Payam of Yirol East County. Upon his arrival at Maburzeet, A soldier identified as Captain Makuei Chieny, beat my father using a gun until he became unconscious and was brought here to Yirol West County hospital,” he said.


“My father has a valid registered legal license from the ministry of forestry which authorized him to cut mahogany trees in Yirol East County as timbers for his house,” he said.
