SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Two Government Officials Shot Dead In Aweil East County

 


Northern Bhar El Ghazal State lost two of its local officials after they were shot dead by suspected Miseriya Miliaria. 

The two killed are: Santino Akech Angok a local Administrator and Arol Yai his Deputy, they were killed in Warguet Town.

Hon. Kiir Your Lual the County Commissioner of Aweil East County said that a police officers was also wounded during the attack.

“It was yesterday (Friday) morning, at around 7 AM where an attack occurred in a place called Warguet Town closer to the border with Sudan, resulting in the killing of a local government officer and his deputy and also two other persons got injured,” said the commissioner.

The commissioner said that they have identified the deceased and the wounded officers  are now undergoing treatment. 

He said that it is still not clear who the attackers are but he suspects the Miseriya Militia from Sudan.

“The wounded are police officer in charge of the station and general service officer attached to Boma office headed by the local government officer. The attackers are suspected to be elements from Misseriya youth who crossed over from Sudan to Warguet.”- He said.
