‎UN, RJMEC Raise Alarm Over Stalled Peace Deal in South Sudan

‎International bodies are sounding the alarm as South Sudan's fragile peace process teeters on the edge of collapse. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) have warned of deepening divisions, rising insecurity, and stalled implementation of the 2018 peace deal. ‎ ‎A Dangerous Breakdown in Peace ‎The 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) brought hope to a nation shattered by civil war. But that hope is now dimming. ‎In a briefing to the UN Security Council, Guang Cong, the Deputy Head of UNMISS, revealed that over 130,000 people have been displaced in recent months due to a surge in armed violence particularly in Upper Nile and Greater Pibor.  ‎The increase in military activity and the escalation of localized conflicts have disrupted humanitarian access and eroded confidence between the signatories of the peace agreement. ‎“These are not just isolated ...

This morning, His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan and accompanying delegation left Juba for Kuacjok, Warrap State. The purpose of this trip is to attend the Catholic Church's centenary celebration. Upon arrival in Wau, Western Bahr El Ghazal State, the President is expected to hold a brief public engagement before proceeding to Kuacjok where he will spend a night and attend the celebration on Sunday. 


After the celebration, His Excellency and the delegation will leave for his rural home in Akon and then to Northern Bahr El Ghazal State on Monday. 




The President visit was preceded by a number of ministers who left Juba on Friday March 17, 2023, and will be joining him in the celebration in Kuacjok. These Ministers are: Hon. Rizik Zacharia Hassan, Hon. Albino Akol Atak, Hon. Madut Biar Yel, Hon. Simon Mijok Mijak and Hon. Nadia Arop Dudi.  While enroute from Wau to Kuacjok, President Kiir is expected to have brief interactions with the public


H:E President Salva Kiir was seen off by First Vice President Dr Riek Machar, cabinet ministers and heads of organized forces.
