Top Opposition General Joins Government Forces in South Sudan

‎A senior opposition army officer has left his group and joined the government army in South Sudan. Brigadier General Adnan Alex Boboya, who was part of the SPLA-IO (the main opposition army), said he has decided to support peace and work with the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), which is the national army. ‎ ‎Speaking in Yei River County, Gen. Boboya said, “I am doing this for the good of my people and my country. It is time for peace. We, as soldiers, should protect our communities, not fight them.” ‎ ‎Government army leaders welcomed him and encouraged other opposition fighters to stop fighting and talk about peace. ‎ ‎This comes just days after over 600 SPLA-IO soldiers also joined the government side. ‎ ‎But some people are worried that these changes could cause more problems for the peace agreement signed in 2018 between President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar.  ‎ ‎There are also reports that Riek Machar is being kept at home and not allowed to move...

 President  Kiir on Saturday congratulated National Basketball Team 'Bright star' for qualifying for FIBA World Cup. He also invited South Sudanese basketball players in other international leagues to join the team and make the country proud.


President Kiir praised the 'patriotic' decision made by the team to represent South Sudan regardless of forgoing luxuries in Western countries. He promised to stand and support the team in the FIBA World Cup campaign scheduled in August 2023.


Senior Presidential Advisor, Gen. Kuol Mayang Juuk also congratulated the Bright stars team for qualifying for FIBA World Cup as well as making it as the top African team. Gen. Kuol added that sports brings people together and can be the best way of bringing peace back to the country.


National Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Albino Bol Dhieu urged government to mobilise South Sudanese players in other international leagues to join the team, adding that camping will start in July before finally going to Japan in August. 


Finally, President of South Sudan Basketball Federation, Luol Deng said the journey for qualification started three years ago in Kenya and now South Sudan qualified for FIBA World Cup.He finally thanked the President for the trust and support bestowed upon the team.

The South Sudan national basketball team is the national basketball team representing South Sudan. Its official name is South Sudan Basketball Federation. It was established in May 2011, and became a member of FIBA in December 2013. They are nicknamed the Bright Stars
