‎UN, RJMEC Raise Alarm Over Stalled Peace Deal in South Sudan

‎International bodies are sounding the alarm as South Sudan's fragile peace process teeters on the edge of collapse. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) have warned of deepening divisions, rising insecurity, and stalled implementation of the 2018 peace deal. ‎ ‎A Dangerous Breakdown in Peace ‎The 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) brought hope to a nation shattered by civil war. Another Aid Worker Killed In Pibor In A Series Of Incident Targeting Humanitarian Workers And Convoys

In a series of violent events targeting Humanitarian Convoys and workers in South Sudan, Another aid worker was killed by armed youths in Greater Pibor Administrative Area "GPAA". 


About a week ago, suspected armed youths from Pibor "GPAA" killed two people leaving others seriously wounded after they coordinated an attack on World Food Programme "WFP" convoy in Jonglei State. 


While speaking to the media, Simon Peter Ajeny a Local Government Minister in Pibor "GPAA" said that, a driver was shot dead when "Gunmen" attacked a convoy of empty trucks heading to Jonglei State. The empty trucks was believed to have delivered food Aid to Greater Pibor Administrative Area. 


 “On Sunday evening, criminals ambushed a convoy of about 6 WFP trucks en route to Bor after having delivered us food. One driver was killed on the spot. The incident occurred in the Kohchar area of Gumuruk County,” Ajeny said. 


The "Local Official" condemned the act and said that they have arrested two suspect in connection with the same incident. 


“As a government, we are angered by the incident. In response, we discharged security forces who managed to apprehend two suspects who happened to be from our area. They are now being investigated in Pibor town.” Ajeny said.


The Area Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Khamis Marajan, confirmed the act and also confirmed that they have two suspects in custody. 


“What happened was that bandits tried to stop one of the trucks, but the driver of that truck was defiant. So they opened fire on him and killed him. He was a Somali national identified as Mohamed Abdelghani. We have since managed to arrest two people who are now under investigation in Pibor. They admitted to the killing and investigations are still ongoing.” Maj. Gen. Khamis said. 


World Food Programme "WFP spokesperson Mr. Snowdan confirmed the incident in an "Email" posted to the media. 


“Commercial trucks returning from Pibor were attacked, these trucks were empty after having delivered WFP food to Pibor.” Snowdon said.


According to Relief Web International, It says that "Jonglei State" is the most food insecure states between October and November 2022, where more than 50% of their populations are facing Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse acute food insecurity, are Jonglei (68%), Unity (66%), Northern Bahr el Ghazal (62%), Upper Nile (58%), Warrap (57%), and Lakes (57%). 


According to Cafod and Anti-Poverty Group And Development Initiative it says that, "South Sudan" has 7.7 million people facing acute malnutrition or starvation as it enters its fifth year of severe food insecurity, according to new research measuring the intensity of food insecurity across populations, produced by Cafod and anti-poverty group Development Initiatives.
