SSPDF Medical Corps and American Research Firm known as RTI International started conducting voluntary male Circumcision exercise with the aim of targeting over 500 men aged between 18-49 in Lakes State, Awerial County.
James Manyiel Agup, Medical Director at Awerial County Hospital while speaking to the media said that, the exercise started on Friday and so far 30 people had underwent the exercise.
The medical director further said that, the exercise was to prevent the spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases like HIV/AIDs and others.
“30 people have already been circumcised since the voluntary circumcision exercise started in the morning (Friday) and the process is ongoing and will last 10 days,” he said. “Those who have been circumcised are advised not to shower or have sex. This is to prevent the wound from getting infected.” James Manyiel said.
The Medical Director further urged the Youths of Awerial County to turn out in large numbers to be circumcised, terming the exercise as free of charge.
“The beneficiaries of this free-of-charge circumcision exercise will remain highly protected from sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS, and syphilis, among others.” James Manyiel said.
Circumcision might have various health benefits, including:
Easier hygiene. Circumcision makes it simpler to wash the penis. However, boys with uncircumcised penises can be taught to wash regularly beneath the foreskin.
Decreased risk of urinary tract infections. The risk of urinary tract infections in males is low, but these infections are more common in uncircumcised males. Severe infections early in life can lead to kidney problems later.
Decreased risk of sexually transmitted infections. Circumcised men might have a lower risk of certain sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Still, safe sexual practices remain essential.
Prevention of penile problems. Occasionally, the foreskin on an uncircumcised penis can be difficult or impossible to retract (phimosis). This can lead to inflammation of the foreskin or head of the penis.
Decreased risk of penile cancer. Although cancer of the penis is rare, it's less common in circumcised men. In addition, cervical cancer is less common in the female sexual partners of circumcised men.
