Top Opposition General Joins Government Forces in South Sudan

‎A senior opposition army officer has left his group and joined the government army in South Sudan. Brigadier General Adnan Alex Boboya, who was part of the SPLA-IO (the main opposition army), said he has decided to support peace and work with the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), which is the national army. ‎ ‎Speaking in Yei River County, Gen. Boboya said, “I am doing this for the good of my people and my country. It is time for peace. We, as soldiers, should protect our communities, not fight them.” ‎ ‎Government army leaders welcomed him and encouraged other opposition fighters to stop fighting and talk about peace. ‎ ‎This comes just days after over 600 SPLA-IO soldiers also joined the government side. ‎ ‎But some people are worried that these changes could cause more problems for the peace agreement signed in 2018 between President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar.  ‎ ‎There are also reports that Riek Machar is being kept at home and not allowed to move...

South Sudan Government and the hold out rebels announced that political dialogues will 'kick off' on Monday in Rome, Italy. 


Rome Initiative For South Sudan is a lay Catholic Association mediating the peace talks between the government of south Sudan and the holdout groups. 


Transitional Government Of National Unity (RTGoNU), which the current government of South Sudan last year suspended the peace talks between the Non Signatories South Sudan Opposition Group (NSSSOG) accusing them of lacking commitments and preparing for war. 


President Kiir had to change his mind when Pope Francis  visited South Sudan last month. 


Presidential Press Secretar, Lily Adhiu while speaking to the media said that the government have been invited for peace talks in Rome next week. 


“Yes, the talks will take place between 20-26 March and the government side has been invited.” Lily said. 


 “They are needed before 20 March, and the meeting will start on 20th. Usually, there is a group that is selected from the government side that used to go for the talks headed by Dr. Marial Benjamin [Minister of Presidential Affairs].” Lily added. 


Gen. Paul Malong, the leader of South Sudan United Front Army (SSUF/A), also confirmed that his faction had received an invitation to resume the peace negotiations. 


"We have been invited to the talks. The agendas of the talks are with the government side. So we will listen to them first because we already have our agenda. All of us in the opposition coalition will attend the talks," Gen. Paul Malong said.
