Top Opposition General Joins Government Forces in South Sudan

‎A senior opposition army officer has left his group and joined the government army in South Sudan. Brigadier General Adnan Alex Boboya, who was part of the SPLA-IO (the main opposition army), said he has decided to support peace and work with the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), which is the national army. ‎ ‎Speaking in Yei River County, Gen. Boboya said, “I am doing this for the good of my people and my country. It is time for peace. We, as soldiers, should protect our communities, not fight them.” ‎ ‎Government army leaders welcomed him and encouraged other opposition fighters to stop fighting and talk about peace. ‎ ‎This comes just days after over 600 SPLA-IO soldiers also joined the government side. ‎ ‎But some people are worried that these changes could cause more problems for the peace agreement signed in 2018 between President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar.  ‎ ‎There are also reports that Riek Machar is being kept at home and not allowed to move...

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Tuesday arrived in Aweil, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State where he had interactions with the public. 


Hundreds of thousands converged at Aweil streets to welcome His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit. 


In his Keynote address, President Salva Kiir Mayardit reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensure that road networks reach to all parts of the country.


“The government is working on building infrastructural development across the country to improve road connectivity across the country” President Kiir reiterated. 


President Kiir also said that the peace agreement is holding and that the roadmap has been approved by all parties and is currently being implemented. 


“My government will go for general elections after transitional period and no more extension of transitional government" 


The President further appeal to parents to prioritised girl child Education, stressing that girls should be given the same opportunity instead of being taken as source of wealth.


“The Issue of girl child education need special attention. Girls should not be taken as source of wealth rather should be given the same opportunity like the boy child to go to school” President echoed. 


Vice President for Services cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol said the people of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State will stand in Solidarity with the government during elections. 


Lastly the Governor of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State Honourable Tong Akeen Ngor appreciated the president for visiting the state.


Aweil is the capital city of Northern Bahr El-Ghazal State. It is also the county seat of Aweil Centre County. The city's infrastructure is relatively developed. 


Aweil now has a functioning railway station, hotel, airport, soccer stadium, and a public hospital. 


The city functions as a team site for the United Nations Mission In South Sudan "UNMISS", Several  "NGOs" providing aid in South Sudan are based here.
