13 Killed in Jonglei Clashes Over Disputed Fishing Ground.

‎Jonglei State, South Sudan. At least 13 people have been killed and more than 20 others injured in renewed communal clashes between the Hol and Ayual communities in Jonglei State, officials confirmed on Thursday. ‎ ‎The deadly fighting broke out on Wednesday at Bioth-Agany Fishing Island, a disputed area between Duk and Twic East counties, after armed youth from the Hol community of Duk reportedly launched an attack on the island currently claimed by the Ayual community of Twic East. ‎ ‎Twic East County Commissioner Juach Arok Juach stated that seven people from his community were killed, seven others wounded, and four remain missing. He added that Hol youth are still occupying the area and tensions remain high. ‎ ‎On the other side, Duk County Commissioner John Chatim confirmed six deaths and 14 injuries among the Hol community.  ‎ ‎“We are urging our youth to cease fighting and allow the government to take over the matter and investigate. The Presidential Press Unit would like to inform the public that the meeting held yesterday between His Excellency, President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny did not end in deadlock as reported by some media houses.


While the two leaders did not  come to an agreement in the meeting yesterday, the consensus among the parties to meet at a later date was a positive commitment to resolve the issues at hand in the spirit of cooperation. Therefore, any attempt to portray this as an impasse threaten to jeopardize the spirit of the meeting. 



Furthermore, given the keen public interest in the outcome of yesterday’s meeting, it is important that our duty to inform should not be overtaken by the urge to sensationalise issues of national importance. In recognition of this, the Presidential Press Unit urges the media professionals particularly, media staff in the Office of the First Vice President to be mindful of their responsibilities towards peace and stability in our country.  


His Excellency the President is committed to the full implementation of the  Agreement in letter and spirit.

Cueibet County Commissioner Arrested Amid Rising Political Tensions in Lakes State ‎

Former Commissioner of Cueibet County of Lakes State, Deng Mario Deng. The Commissioner of Cueibet County, Deng Mario Deng, has been arrested in Rumbek, the capital of Lakes State, in a move that deepens political tensions between the SPLM-IO and the ruling SPLM party.  ‎ ‎Deng, a member of the SPLM-IO, was taken into custody shortly after he responded to a summons from Governor Rin Tueny Mabor on April 15. ‎ ‎Though Deng initially reported that he was free to move and retained his security detail upon arrival in Rumbek, his status changed dramatically by Wednesday, with his arrest now confirmed.  ‎ ‎The reason behind the commissioner’s detention has not been made public, and no official charges have been announced. ‎ ‎This arrest comes just days after several senior SPLM-IO officials, including Lakes State Deputy Governor Isaiah Akol Mathiang, were also detained by the National Security Service.  ‎ ‎The wave of arrests has raised alarms about the stability of the power-s...

Ugandan Troops Accused of War Crimes in South Sudan: Civil Society Demands ICC Action

 ‎ UPDF.  A South Sudanese campaign group, the Reclaim Campaign, has submitted a formal request to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate alleged atrocities committed by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) during their incursion into Upper Nile State in March 2025. ‎ ‎The group alleges that the UPDF carried out indiscriminate bombings, used chemical weapons, and targeted civilians particularly from the Nuer ethnic group while operating inside South Sudanese territory without the consent of the transitional government.  ‎ ‎According to the campaign, these actions could constitute war crimes, crimes against humanity, and acts of aggression under the Rome Statute. ‎ ‎The Reclaim Campaign's petition also claims that the Ugandan government has shown no willingness to hold its military accountable, making a case for the ICC to intervene.  ‎ ‎The group cited statements by Ugandan officials that allegedly dehumanize South Sudanese citizens and promote et...
