SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny announced that Gen. David Reath Malual, the presidential advisor for peace passed away on Monday at 'Primrose Hospital' in Juba. 


The 'deceased' Presidential Advisor succumbed to complications arising from his asthma illness. 


First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny stated that while attending a crucial meeting the deceased was 'taken ill'. 


“While he was presiding over a meeting with Lou leaders to evaluate the results of the three-day Lou Conference that was held on 2-4 March 2023 at Freedom Hall, he was attacked by asthma,” Machar’s statement read. “He was rushed to the Primrose Hospital. He died minutes on arrival to the hospital while being attended to by doctors.”Dr. Riek Machar said. 


He praised the work done by the late Gen. Reath and called him a 'Hero' during the struggle to liberate South Sudan. 


“On behalf of the entire Movement and people of South Sudan, I am conveying my condolences to his family, relatives, and friends,” Machar wrote. “May God rest his soul in eternal peace.” Dr.Riek Machar said. 


The late General was appointed by the president as a 'Presidential Advisor' for peace on 14 March 2022. 


The late General was 'affiliated' with the Party of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar's SPLMA-IO.
