Top Opposition General Joins Government Forces in South Sudan

‎A senior opposition army officer has left his group and joined the government army in South Sudan. Brigadier General Adnan Alex Boboya, who was part of the SPLA-IO (the main opposition army), said he has decided to support peace and work with the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), which is the national army. ‎ ‎Speaking in Yei River County, Gen. Boboya said, “I am doing this for the good of my people and my country. It is time for peace. We, as soldiers, should protect our communities, not fight them.” ‎ ‎Government army leaders welcomed him and encouraged other opposition fighters to stop fighting and talk about peace. ‎ ‎This comes just days after over 600 SPLA-IO soldiers also joined the government side. ‎ ‎But some people are worried that these changes could cause more problems for the peace agreement signed in 2018 between President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar.  ‎ ‎There are also reports that Riek Machar is being kept at home and not allowed to move...

President Kiir on Wednesday launched road construction in Aroyo Aweil Center County, Northern Bahr El Gazal State.


Aroyo Aweil Center County is a town in Northern Bahr El Gazal State Aroyo was part of Aweil Center County, but in 2015 became the headquarter of Aroyo County in Aweil. 


Aroyo is located on the east bank of the Chel River, to the south of Marial Bai. There was a small airport just north of the town


In January 2012 it was reported that 64 kilometres (40 mi) of road had been completed between Aweil to the east and Aroyo. 


The project lasted from February to December 2011. In August 2016 some parts of the road from Aweil to Aroyo had been washed away by the rains. Another road led to the B41 to the south. The B41 runs between Wau and Deim Zubeir


The name Mading Aweil is a corrupted Dinka's name taken from Mading Ayuel. The name Mading Aweil was derived from an event in which a bull coloured “Mading” was slaughtered as a sacrifice by somebody called Ayuel, a man from the Paliej (paan Achiec) clan, a clan that first settled in what is now known as Aweil town.
