‎International bodies are sounding the alarm as South Sudan's fragile peace process teeters on the edge of collapse. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) have warned of deepening divisions, rising insecurity, and stalled implementation of the 2018 peace deal. ‎ ‎A Dangerous Breakdown in Peace ‎The 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) brought hope to a nation shattered by civil war. But that hope is now dimming. ‎In a briefing to the UN Security Council, Guang Cong, the Deputy Head of UNMISS, revealed that over 130,000 people have been displaced in recent months due to a surge in armed violence particularly in Upper Nile and Greater Pibor.  ‎The increase in military activity and the escalation of localized conflicts have disrupted humanitarian access and eroded confidence between the signatories of the peace agreement. ‎“These are not just isolated ...

President Kiir Speech On International Women's Day

Allow me, on behalf of His Excellency, Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan, to extend our  w armest wishes to women and girls as South Sudan joins the rest of the world in celebrating the International Woman’s Day.

Every year, countries under the United Nations banner set aside a day to reflect on the role of women and their enormous contribution across different spheres of society and to reaffirm commitment to the UN Declaration on the elimination of discrimination against women.

The Declaration on women’s rights classifies, as an offense, all forms of discrimination against women and calls on the member states to abolish laws, custom ary practices and regulations that undermine woman’s rights based on gender, age, ethnicity or economic status among other grounds.

In South Sudan, the Government under His Excellency President Kiir has implemented laws and gender equality policies such as rectification of the African Charter on Women’s rights (Maputo Protocol) and allocation of 35% Affirmative Actions by putting women in the highest leadership and decision-making positions in the Country. The Government in partnership with development partners has also established Gender-Based Violence Court, a fundamental step in protecting women’s rights and holding accountable the perpetrators of gender based violence. These efforts among others demonstrates His Excellency’s commitment in advancing woman’s rights by providing equal opportunities for all regardless of gender.

While we celebrate the progress made in recent decades on the promotion and protection of women’s rights, the UN theme for this year’s celebration: “DigitALL; Innovation and technology for gender equality”, call on all of us to use technology to collectively design innovative solutions that addresses modern-day challenges facing our mothers, sisters and daughters.

Once again, on behalf of His Excellency the President, I would like to wish the women of South Sudan a happy International Women’s Day.
