SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Egyptian Company, BTC Global, Launched The First And Only Gold Refinery In South Sudan

BTC Global an Egyptian company today launched the first ever 'Gold Refinery's in South Sudan, the company was also given the mandate to mine, refine and export gold from South Sudan..


Vice President In Charge Of Infrastructures Clusters Taban Deng Gai was at the launch site and he said that, the only challenge the 'Gold Refinery' are the cartels dealing in Gold in the country.


"It is not going to be an easy thing because there are cartels or mafias in those places mainly the Somalis, they are the ones selling our gold to Kenya and Uganda. They will be a problem especially when you want to buy gold from there they will increase the price of gold," he stated. "But you will defeat them because you are operating officially under the laws of South Sudan."  Taban Deng Gai said. 


Taban Deng Gai was also encouraging the people of South Sudan to join and Invest as suppliers of gold. 


"To young South Sudanese, this is an important opportunity for you; you can work as the suppliers of gold to BTC. Please go Kapoeta, Lobonok, and Chukudum and do the gold business." Taban Deng Gai said. 


William Aliga Bethsmith, a representative from the ministry of mining hailed BTC Global for installing the refinery in the country.


A representative from the ministry Mr. William Aliga Bethsmith said that, he is happy that BTC Global has install the refinery in the country.


"Coming to the supply of gold, this is the most important aspect that you need to be very robust in, whereby you need to work hand in hand with the artisanal miners in South Sudan because for now, these are the people who are mining the gold. South Sudan doesn't have industrial mining and it still uses artisanal mining."  Aliga said. 


The Ministry of Mining representative further said that, they will fully support the BTC Global Operations and and also urged the company to consider 'Health and Safety' of people living near the gold refinery. 


Aligo also cautioned the company to take the health and safety of the people living near the refinery. 


Raafat Mostafa a representative of BTC Global assured the people of South Sudan that the project will bring development to the people.


"We believe that this project will bring a positive impact on the people of South Sudan over the next years. Today we share the passion for a common mission to dig the golden opportunities and we look forward to achieving those milestones with our new family here in South Sudan." Mostafa said. 


One of the leaders from 'GPAA' Mr. David Yau Yau said that the launch of the refinery is a blessing to all South Sudanese. 


"We will be blessed in the Republic of South Sudan to have such kind of company that deals with refinery and other exploratory parts of mining in the Republic of South Sudan. This is part of development." YauYau said.
