‎International bodies are sounding the alarm as South Sudan's fragile peace process teeters on the edge of collapse. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) have warned of deepening divisions, rising insecurity, and stalled implementation of the 2018 peace deal. ‎ ‎A Dangerous Breakdown in Peace ‎The 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) brought hope to a nation shattered by civil war. But that hope is now dimming. ‎In a briefing to the UN Security Council, Guang Cong, the Deputy Head of UNMISS, revealed that over 130,000 people have been displaced in recent months due to a surge in armed violence particularly in Upper Nile and Greater Pibor.  ‎The increase in military activity and the escalation of localized conflicts have disrupted humanitarian access and eroded confidence between the signatories of the peace agreement. ‎“These are not just isolated ...

Opinion: Dr. John Gai Yoh: The Ideal Choice for the Top Diplomat Position in the Country

Dr. John Gai Yoh:
Giving His Opinion

Top Trending News Today:

A few weeks ago, His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit relieved Hon. Mayiik Ayii Deng of his duties as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Deputy Minister Hon. Deng Dau was directed as Acting Minister while the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) searches for a suitable replacement. As the Chairman of SPLM conducts his search, I strongly recommend Dr. John Gai Yoh to be appointed as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs.

As our country moves towards peace and elections, we must equally improve our relationships with nations of significance to us. To achieve this goal, we need a new top diplomat who comprehends the intricacies of geopolitics and geoeconomics. In my opinion, Dr. Yoh is one of the most capable candidates for this role.

Dr. John Gai Yoh possesses the necessary qualifications and experience to effectively execute this vital position. From 2013 to 2016, he served as both Minister of General Education and Minister of Higher Education, a period in which our educational system was greatly improved, from the prevention of National Examination malpractice to the improvement of various government universities. For example, Professor John Akech, who later improved the University of Juba greatly, was appointed by him as a result of his recommendation.

Additionally, he was a Presidential Advisor to H.E. President Salva Kiir. Dr. John Gai Yoh is also a distinguished figure in the field of geopolitics, having previously served as an ambassador to Turkey and taught as a professor at various foreign universities. These experiences have fostered his knowledge and understanding of international relations.

Furthermore and more importantly, Dr. John Gai Yoh is a loyal and dedicated member of the SPLM. He has shown a deep commitment to the President's agenda and policies and would work collaboratively with H.E. the President to achieve the goals of the SPLM and our nation.

In terms of education, Dr. John Gai Yoh is well-educated. He obtained Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the American University in Beirut, as well as a Ph.D. in International Politics from the University of South Africa. Dr. Yoh’s appointment would ensure that South Sudan's foreign policy is guided by a seasoned diplomat. Thus, it is my hope that His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit will consider him for this critical position
