A hand grenade exploded in Malakal Town Uppernile State claiming the life of a woman and leaving twelve (12) others critically wounded. 


Uppernile State Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Chol Atem while speaking to the media said that, unknown man threw the ahnd grenade at the public who were participating in a social gathering at Hai Malakia around 7 PM.


Uppernile State Police Commissioner further said that, the injured were immediately rushed the hospital in Malakal for treatment. The culprit was never caught since he fled the scene of the crime he committed. 


“We believe that the person who lobbed the bomb was among the people who gathered, but he has not yet been arrested,” Maj. Gen. Chol said. 


The head of The Police Force in Uppernile State further said that, investigations are being conducted.


 “Those who sustained minor injuries were discharged from the hospital. I can assure the citizens that the security situation is calm.”  Maj. Gen. Chol said.


Malakal is a city in South Sudan. It is the capital of Upper Nile State, South Sudan, along the White Nike River. It also serves as the headquarter of Malakal county and it used to be the headquarter of Upper Nile Region from 1970s to late 1990s.


As of 2005 the population of Malakal was estimated at 129,620. The 2008 Sudanese Census , which was boycotted by the South Sudanese government, recorded a population of about 126,500. However, those results are disputed by the authorities in Juba. In 2010, it was estimated that the population of Malakal had grown to about 139,450.
