President Kiir Travels to UAE in Push for Stronger Ties and Investment in South Sudan

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has embarked on an official diplomatic visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), signaling a renewed effort by the Government of South Sudan to strengthen bilateral ties, attract foreign investment, and advance regional peace through economic diplomacy.

‎According to Presidential Press Secretary Ambassador David Amuor Majur, the visit will include high level meetings with Emirati government officials and top investors, with a focus on building confidence in South Sudan’s economic potential.

‎“President Kiir is presenting a compelling case for investment, based on recent reforms that have improved the ease of doing business in South Sudan,” said Ambassador Amuor.

‎A Growing Partnership

‎The UAE has been a strategic diplomatic and economic partner for South Sudan since the young nation gained independence in 2011. Over the years, relations have grown, especially in areas of humanitarian aid, trade, and investment interest.

‎In 2022, the UAE hosted the first South Sudan UAE Investment Forum in Abu Dhabi, where discussions centered on oil, mining, agriculture, and infrastructure. Several Emirati firms expressed interest in South Sudan’s untapped resources and its strategic position in East Africa.

‎More recently, Emirati humanitarian organizations like the Emirates Red Crescent have supported health and education initiatives in conflict-affected areas of South Sudan. The UAE has also offered scholarships to South Sudanese students, fostering people-to-people ties.

‎Investment Opportunities on the Table

‎During this visit, President Kiir is expected to pitch key sectors for investment, including:

‎Agriculture: With over 70% arable land and reliable rainfall in some regions, South Sudan is positioning itself as a future breadbasket of East Africa.

‎Oil and Gas: While production has been declining, the government is courting partners for technology upgrades, refining capacity, and exploration of new blocks.

‎Infrastructure: Roads, bridges, energy projects, and housing are major priorities for post-conflict reconstruction.

‎Tourism and Wildlife: South Sudan is home to one of Africa’s largest animal migrations and pristine wetlands, areas of interest to eco-conscious Gulf investors.

‎Peace, Stability, and Regional Diplomacy

‎President Kiir’s visit comes amid a wider government effort to engage with Gulf nations not just for economic benefits but also for political and security support. The UAE has become increasingly active in African peace diplomacy, and South Sudan’s leadership is looking to benefit from that influence.

‎The two countries are expected to discuss trade relations, infrastructure partnerships, and South Sudan’s role in regional stability, especially ahead of the country’s planned elections and continued peace implementation process.

‎Looking Ahead

‎This diplomatic trip is seen as part of a broader international outreach strategy. As South Sudan emerges from years of conflict, it is seeking to rebuild its economy through global partnerships particularly with countries like the UAE that have both the capital and political will to invest in fragile but promising environments.

‎If successful, the outcomes of this visit could lead to new investments, stronger diplomatic engagement, and long-term benefits for the people of South Sudan.
