SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Ten people lost their lives when the boat they were in was attacked by unknown gunmen, Member of Parliament representing Unity State confirmed the incident. 


The attacked on the stationary boat carrying relief supplies happened on Tuesday and was die to set off for Unity State. 


Hon. Dak Badit, a lawmakers representing Leer County in Unity State the boat was attacked after it left Gabat around 2 PM. 


"The boat started to move from Gabat around 2 PM and in fact, it happened that it stuck in the riverside and the reason was because of the shallowness of the river." Badit said. 


He further stated that "When that happened, those criminals came and asked for assistance and the assistance was given to them by the passengers." -Dak Badit said. 


He concluded by saying that: “After they were given the assistance they needed, they were given money and some items, and then after moving a distance they shot at those on the boat.” -Dak concluded. 


The Member of Parliament representing Leer County was able to identify the deceased by names, Luony Garech, Bachuoi Tech Nhial, Bol Tech Nhial, Chonath Dieu Kor, Wang Dhieu, Gatchang Detor Kai, Gatkuoth Bap, Paulino Madut Dut One unknown and Gatkuoth Yaka.
