‎Tension Rise in Malakal Amid Clashes Between Government Forces and White Army in Upper Nile ‎

 Wounded soldiers lie in bed at the general military hospital Juba.  ‎Malakal, the capital of Upper Nile State, is on edge as wounded soldiers from recent clashes in Ulang County arrive in the city, sparking fear among residents particularly from the Nuer community.  ‎ ‎The fighting, which began in February, involves the White Army, a militia group largely composed of Nuer youth, and government troops. ‎ ‎According to Maj. Gen. President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the  accompanying delegation arrived in New York United States of America on Monday to take part in the High-Level meetings of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.


President Salva Kiir Mayardiit was warmly welcomed at by the country's UN Permanent Representative Akuei Bona Malual and South Sudan Ambassador to US Philip Jada. 


Press Secretary Lily Adhieu said the President will address the session on September 21, highlighting the progress in the peace implementation and preparations for 2024 general elections.


President Kiir will also speak about the crisis in Sudan and his role and commitment in trying to resolve the raging conflict in Sudan.  


The South Sudanese leader will actively participate in the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals Summit, where global leaders will outline strategies for transformative and accelerated actions towards the 2030 agenda.


The summit agenda - “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals Towards Peace, Prosperity, Progress and the Sustainability For All” – affords an opportunity for member states to take mid-way assessment on the successes and shortfalls towards attaining the Global Goals.


The 78th session of the UN General Assembly will begin on 18 September 2023, the first day of the UNGA debate will be on Tuesday, 19 September 2023. 


The leaders of the world will gather to engage in the annual high-level General Debate under the theme, “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all.”


The objective of the summit is to Initiate studies and make recommendations to promote international political cooperation, the development and codification of international law, the realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and international collaboration in the economic, social, humanitarian, cultural, educational and health fields.
