SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

SSPDF Soldier apprehended for shooting his pregnant wife in Rumbek

The soldier shot and wounded his pregnant wife leaving her with three bullet wounds, he was later apprehended awaiting trials. 


The incident took place in Timic village on Sunday, the reason for the incident is because of dowry payments. 


It is also believed that, the wife's parents decided to open a case at Rumbek Town Court asking for the soldier to pay the dowry or face divorce. 


This dispute between the soldier and the parents of his wife festered over the years leading to the incident. 


Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac while speaking to the media said that, the soldier killed his wife because he was dragged to court for refusing to pay dowry by the parents of the wife. 


“He shot his wife identified as Awut with 3 bullets. One bullet landed on her left eye and it destroyed her eyesight and the other two bullets hit her in the abdomen,” Maj. Elijah said. 


Maj. Elijah said that, the soldier resorted to violence instead of paying the dowry and the court had adjourned the hearing till Monday. 


“Recently, his in-laws decided to open a case against him in Rumbek Town Court to compel him to either pay the dowry or divorce their daughter. The court had adjourned the hearing to Monday, but instead, he chose to resort to violence, shooting his wife with the intent to kill her.” Maj. Elijah said. 


The soldier managed to fled the scene of crime but was later apprehended by the security forces on Monday and he is now in custody as investigation is on going. 


“He subsequently fled the scene of the crime but fortunately the commissioner of Rumbek Central County and security forces managed to apprehend the SSPDF soldier on Monday and he is now in custody and an investigation is ongoing.” Maj. Elijah added.


Rumbek State Hospital Director Dr. Terran Madit Terran said that, her condition is currently stable. 


“So far the woman is a little bit stable because she has multiple gunshot wounds. We do not know the reason for the shooting but she was brought to the hospital in a very critical condition and we operated on her the same day,” Terran said..


“She had injuries to her mouth and abdomen. We did our best, and the rest we left to God. We managed and did our best. She is now under observation and receiving treatment. Currently, we cannot consider transferring her until her condition stabilizes.” Terran said.


The Woman shot and wounded is a mother of three and she is in the early weeks of her pregnancy.
