Russia to Open Embassy in Juba: A New Chapter in South Sudan–Russia Relations

‎ ‎In a significant diplomatic move, the Russian Federation is preparing to open its embassy in South Sudan between September and October 2025, marking a major milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations. ‎ ‎The news was confirmed by South Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Chol Tong Mayay, during a farewell event for a South Sudanese ICT delegation that recently attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025). ‎ ‎A Long-Awaited Diplomatic Presence ‎The planned opening of a Russian embassy in Juba is seen as a long-overdue development in South Sudan-Russia relations.  ‎ ‎Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, Russia has maintained diplomatic accreditation to Juba from its embassy in Khartoum.  ‎ ‎The establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Sudanese capital is expected to significantly boost cooperation, streamline consular services, and facilitate more direct political, economic, and cultural exchanges....

I stayed in Juba to ensure that there is peace, FVP Dr. Riek Machar said.

Dr. Riek Machar, South Sudan First Vice President 'FVP' while addressing the media on Thursday said that, the only reason he agreed to stay in Juba is to guarantee the people that there is peace,  but he refused to comment on the allegations that his move is restricted. 


In the year 2018, Dr. Riek Machar signed the peace agreement deal but he returned to juba two years after signing the peace agreement in the year 2020, the peace agreement ended the devastating civil war in the country.

Ever since the FVP stepped foot in South  Sudan, Dr. Riek never stepped foot to the country side nor outside the country, in which the deputy of the SPLM-IO leader describes as unfair. 


First Deputy Speaker of the TNLA Parliament, Hon. Oyet Nathaniel while addressing the press said that, FVP Dr. Machar movement is restricted to travel beyond Juba and cannot even travel for medical reasons too.

For his part, SPLM Secretary General Peter Lam Both, refutes the allegations and said that Machar is a freeman. 


Dr. Machar clarified the allegations by saying that, he never went out in the last three years just ensure that people know peace is here. 


“I never went out to ensure that people know there is peace. By the time, nobody will say oh no there is there and here.” Dr. Machar said.

FVP Dr. Machar, statement was made during the commemoration of the International Day of Peace in Juba South Sudan on Thursday. 


FVP Dr. Machar further insisted that, TNLA government is committed to peace, but called upon the people to lead the peace by eradicating conflicts in their respective communities.
