Russia to Open Embassy in Juba: A New Chapter in South Sudan–Russia Relations

‎ ‎In a significant diplomatic move, the Russian Federation is preparing to open its embassy in South Sudan between September and October 2025, marking a major milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations. ‎ ‎The news was confirmed by South Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Chol Tong Mayay, during a farewell event for a South Sudanese ICT delegation that recently attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025). ‎ ‎A Long-Awaited Diplomatic Presence ‎The planned opening of a Russian embassy in Juba is seen as a long-overdue development in South Sudan-Russia relations.  ‎ ‎Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, Russia has maintained diplomatic accreditation to Juba from its embassy in Khartoum.  ‎ ‎The establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Sudanese capital is expected to significantly boost cooperation, streamline consular services, and facilitate more direct political, economic, and cultural exchanges....

President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the  accompanying delegation arrived in New York United States of America on Monday to take part in the High-Level meetings of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.


President Salva Kiir Mayardiit was warmly welcomed at by the country's UN Permanent Representative Akuei Bona Malual and South Sudan Ambassador to US Philip Jada. 


Press Secretary Lily Adhieu said the President will address the session on September 21, highlighting the progress in the peace implementation and preparations for 2024 general elections.


President Kiir will also speak about the crisis in Sudan and his role and commitment in trying to resolve the raging conflict in Sudan.  


The South Sudanese leader will actively participate in the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals Summit, where global leaders will outline strategies for transformative and accelerated actions towards the 2030 agenda.


The summit agenda - “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals Towards Peace, Prosperity, Progress and the Sustainability For All” – affords an opportunity for member states to take mid-way assessment on the successes and shortfalls towards attaining the Global Goals.


The 78th session of the UN General Assembly will begin on 18 September 2023, the first day of the UNGA debate will be on Tuesday, 19 September 2023. 


The leaders of the world will gather to engage in the annual high-level General Debate under the theme, “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all.”


The objective of the summit is to Initiate studies and make recommendations to promote international political cooperation, the development and codification of international law, the realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and international collaboration in the economic, social, humanitarian, cultural, educational and health fields.
