‎President Kiir, UN Peacekeeping Chief Discuss Strengthening UNMISS Support Amid Global Budget Cuts ‎

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday held talks with Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, focusing on strengthening cooperation between South Sudan and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

‎During the meeting in Juba, the two leaders reviewed the country’s peace and security situation and discussed ways to enhance UNMISS’s role in supporting the ongoing peace process.

‎Lacroix acknowledged the financial constraints currently affecting UN peacekeeping operations globally, noting that UNMISS is also facing significant budget cuts. 

However, he assured President Kiir that the UN remains committed to sustaining its support for peace and stability in South Sudan.

‎He reaffirmed that UNMISS will continue working closely with the government to promote reconciliation, protect civilians, and facilitate humanitarian access in line with its mandate.

‎The meeting comes at a time when the transitional government is working to consolidate peace and prepare the country for its first post-independence elections.
