Russia to Open Embassy in Juba: A New Chapter in South Sudan–Russia Relations

‎ ‎In a significant diplomatic move, the Russian Federation is preparing to open its embassy in South Sudan between September and October 2025, marking a major milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations. ‎ ‎The news was confirmed by South Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Chol Tong Mayay, during a farewell event for a South Sudanese ICT delegation that recently attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025). ‎ ‎A Long-Awaited Diplomatic Presence ‎The planned opening of a Russian embassy in Juba is seen as a long-overdue development in South Sudan-Russia relations.  ‎ ‎Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, Russia has maintained diplomatic accreditation to Juba from its embassy in Khartoum.  ‎ ‎The establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Sudanese capital is expected to significantly boost cooperation, streamline consular services, and facilitate more direct political, economic, and cultural exchanges....

President Salva Kiir Mayardiit, has appointed Angelina Teny as the new Minister of Interior through a Republican Decree. A similar decree also appointed Marial Gumke as her deputy.


Angelina Jany Teny is a South Sudanese politician who served as Minister of Defence since March 2020, also she is the wife of SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny. 


Kiir, pleads with the UN General Assembly to uplift arms embargo: President Kiir addressed the UN General Assembly and pleaded with them to uplift the arms embargo in South Sudan and his commitment to world peace.


Angelina Jany Teny, worked as the State Minister of Energy and Mining in the defunct Khartoum-Sudan government from 2005 to 2010. 


In the year 2010 she vied for the position of the governor of Unity State in April 2010 but she wasn't successful and she claimed that their was rigging in the elections process. 


Earlier this year, President Kiir, issued a decree dismissing Angelina Teny from office of Defense Minister. 


Unity State, Prime Minister given seven days ultimatum to come for questioning by the lawmakers: Unity State Finance Minister given seven days ultimatum to comply and come for questioning or face action, Unity State Parliament declared.


Angelina Jany Teny, is a leading member of the opposition SPLM-IO that is a principal party to the 2018 peace agreement that ended a five-year civil war.


The president also removed the interior minister, who is a member of his own party. No reasons were cited for the firings.


According to the terms of the peace deal, the ministry of defense is to be led by Machar's party and the interior ministry by Kiir's.
