Russia to Open Embassy in Juba: A New Chapter in South Sudan–Russia Relations

‎ ‎In a significant diplomatic move, the Russian Federation is preparing to open its embassy in South Sudan between September and October 2025, marking a major milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations. ‎ ‎The news was confirmed by South Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Chol Tong Mayay, during a farewell event for a South Sudanese ICT delegation that recently attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025). ‎ ‎A Long-Awaited Diplomatic Presence ‎The planned opening of a Russian embassy in Juba is seen as a long-overdue development in South Sudan-Russia relations.  ‎ ‎Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, Russia has maintained diplomatic accreditation to Juba from its embassy in Khartoum.  ‎ ‎The establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Sudanese capital is expected to significantly boost cooperation, streamline consular services, and facilitate more direct political, economic, and cultural exchanges....

South Sudan People's Liberation Movement In Opposition "SPLM-IO" officials met and discussed ways forward after they had a "stalemate" with the government over the dismissal of their very own Defence Minister.


The move by President Kiir to "fire" SPLM-IO Defence Minister prompted "SPLM-IO to have the crucial meeting on ways forward since the "president" blatantly breached a peace agreement. 


SPLM-IO Defence Minister was sacked and also the Interior Minister was also dismissed triggering a disputes between the two parties. 


Anonymously speaking to the media SPLM-IO senior member said that: “The meeting of the SPLM Political Bureau took place in Juba after the swearing of the new defense minister. The meeting discussed the violation of the peace agreement,” SPLM-IO senior Official said. 


 “The SPLM-IO reaffirmed its position on the unilateral decision by the president to remove the defense minister and swap the two ministries. It is a violation of the peace agreement. So the SPLM-IO calls for the reinstatement of the defense minister and revocation of the decision swapping the ministries.” SPLM-IO senior Official said.


The Peace Agreement is in "Jeopardy" because of the stalemate over the Defence Ministry position. SPLM-IO senior Official said. 


 “We are now changing our strategy from just issuing statements to a diplomatic and political move. There are ongoing initiatives for interventions into the matter and find an amicable solution to the issue,” SPLM-IO SENIOR OFFICIAL said.


“The security arrangements should be fully implemented; the refugees should be repatriated and legal frameworks for the elections need to be in place. Also, we need freedom for the political parties,” he concluded.
