SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

The reasons to why the government deployed SSPDF along Juba-Bor highway was to contain attacks on travellers and to also reopen the highway, Police Spokesperson Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin said. 


An incident happened on Tues where four people were killed and three others wounded when a passenger vehicle came under attack in Mangala Central Equatoria State.


The officials from Jonglei State are accusing armed youths from Terkeka County of carrying out the attack..


Police spokesperson Gen. Justin while speaking to the media said that, the army are deployed and police commissioners are working to ensure the safety of travellers. 


“The road was not okay for the last two days but we have already sent forces on the ground and the police commissioners of Jonglei and Central Equatoria are working to make sure that the road is safe. After the attacks, the situation is now reported to be calm but tensions are still existing,” he said. “We are expecting more reports from our forces on the ground and are still investigating the attacks but no one has been arrested yet. A foreign driver and his assistant were attacked on Wednesday and beaten but they were released. We have not identified the attackers but the forces are still investigating.” Gen. Justin said. 


The Deputy head of drivers in Bor confirmed the incident and said vehicles started moving with escort from the army starting from Wednesday. 


“On Tuesday, a car coming from Juba to Bor was attacked on the road by the people of Mallanganyaro, and on Wednesday they also attacked a vehicle coming from Juba but no people are injured,” he said. “Since Wednesday, vehicles are being escorted by government soldiers and when they find you on the road, they escort you. However, I told the drivers not to carry any passengers for now.” Deputy head of drivers in bor said.
