Russia to Open Embassy in Juba: A New Chapter in South Sudan–Russia Relations

‎ ‎In a significant diplomatic move, the Russian Federation is preparing to open its embassy in South Sudan between September and October 2025, marking a major milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations. ‎ ‎The news was confirmed by South Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Chol Tong Mayay, during a farewell event for a South Sudanese ICT delegation that recently attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025). ‎ ‎A Long-Awaited Diplomatic Presence ‎The planned opening of a Russian embassy in Juba is seen as a long-overdue development in South Sudan-Russia relations.  ‎ ‎Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, Russia has maintained diplomatic accreditation to Juba from its embassy in Khartoum.  ‎ ‎The establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Sudanese capital is expected to significantly boost cooperation, streamline consular services, and facilitate more direct political, economic, and cultural exchanges....

President Kiir on Sunday participated in the IGAD Head of States and government emergency virtual  meeting. 


The main objectives of the meeting was to discuss the unfolding situation in Sudan and find an amicable solution. 


The meeting was attended by Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Kenyan President Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh and President of Somalia, Hassan Shiek Mahoumd.


Kenya President, Ruto said the outbreak of violence will only reverse the gains Sudan has made to the detriment of its lasting peace and prosperity. 


President Ruto further said that,  Kenya is available to offer any help needed in the peaceful process of choice by the two conflicting parties.


Yesterday president Kiir said, he was in direct contact with the two warring generals and he asked them to cease all hostilies as the guarantor of Juba Peace Agreement " JPA". 


IGAD main mandate, is to promote regional cooperation and integration among its member states with the aim of improving the welfare of all citizens. 


To achieve this, IGAD works through the two programme areas of trade, industry and tourism, and infrastructure development.
