SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

South Sudan National Police Service said that, they managed to apprehend over 40 culprits alleged to have been robbing motorcycles in Juba over a couple of weeks ago. 


Daniel Justin, National Police Spokesperson while addressing the media said that, the operation conducted was triggered because of an already formed investigation of missing motorcycles. 


“This was as a result of a committee formed to investigate cases of motorcycle robbery because, for the last two weeks, cases have been on the rise, and some people got killed now; through the committee, we managed to arrest some people, and they went as far as showing us those who were involved.” Daniel said.


Daniel Justin said that they have managed to recover 34 of the missing 117 motorcycles and they are still working hard to recover all the missing motorcycles. 


The National Police Spokesperson is urging the netizens to coorperate with with the security organs in place by reporting cases of criminal activities in their area of residence. 


“There is a need for the public to cooperate with the organised forces by informing the organized forces in the sectors wherever there is any suspected insecurity situation; reporting timely is essential because it will help us to come in and address the matter very quickly." Daniel said.
