SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

President Kiir Reinstated the sacked Jonglei State Legislative Assembly Speaker four months after he sacked her.  


The presidential decree was broadcasted on the "State owned" South Sudan Broadcasting Cooperation, The SPLM-IO nominated speaker was reinstated. 


President Kiir fired Jonglei State nominated speaker without giving in clear reasons earlier in January this year. 


Facebook page of Office Of The President wrote that, the president and vice president met yesterday evening to discuss "a wide range issues". 


Presidential Affairs Minister Dr. Barnaba Mari Benjamin also said the meeting resolved most of the challenges and outstanding issues of concern. 


Speaker Amer Ateny Alier hinted that the main reason for her dismissal might be due to her demand for salary arrears for the State Employees. 


“My dismissal is a culmination of a long-running conflict between me and the Jonglei governor for standing for our people over the issues like unpaid salary arrears, his continued absentia in the state for months, and that of an impeached minister who still serves in defiance,” she said in January. “What surprised us in SPLM-IO is that there was no prior consent before the decree. If the president knows what is happening in Jonglei State, I believe he would stand with me for being a voice of the people.” Amer Ateny said.
