‎UN, RJMEC Raise Alarm Over Stalled Peace Deal in South Sudan

‎International bodies are sounding the alarm as South Sudan's fragile peace process teeters on the edge of collapse. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) have warned of deepening divisions, rising insecurity, and stalled implementation of the 2018 peace deal. ‎ ‎A Dangerous Breakdown in Peace ‎The 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) brought hope to a nation shattered by civil war. President Salva Kiir Mayardit has called for a sustainable ceasefire, as a Crucial Step towards bringing stability in Sudan.


Kiir was addressing the Summit of Sudan's neighbours in Cairo on Thursday, outlining a set of recommendations crucial to finding a comprehensive peaceful and political settlement in Sudan while "prioritizing the interests of the Sudanese people."


The South Sudanese leader said any solution to the crisis should respect the sovereignty and teTerritorial Integrity of Sudan, warning against foreign intervention in Sudan.


“Our priorities include finding African solutions to the continent's crises,” Kiir said.


The summit seeks to set effective frameworks to peacefully settle the crisis in coordination with other regional and international tracks.


Presidential Affairs Minister Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin told journalists that it is important to bring together the different factions and parties to engage in constructive discussions to find a path towards peace.


The leaders called for continued cooperation, support, and diplomatic efforts to ensure the implementation of the recommendations put forth by President Kiir and other parties involved.
