Breaking News: President Kiir Fires Lam Akol, Appoints Rizik Zachariah as New Minister of Transport

‎President Salva Kiir Mayardit has dismissed Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin from his position as the Minister of Transport and appointed Hon. Rizik Zachariah Hassan as his replacement in a presidential decree read on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Tuesday evening.

‎

‎The decree did not specify reasons for Dr. Akol’s removal, but political analysts say the change comes amid mounting concerns over inefficiency and internal wrangles within the Ministry of Transport, particularly over the management of infrastructure projects and transport safety reforms.

‎

‎Rizik Zachariah, who previously served as the Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, is a seasoned politician and close ally of President Kiir. 

‎

His appointment is seen as part of a wider government reshuffle aimed at improving service delivery and ensuring loyalty within key ministries as South Sudan heads toward the anticipated national elections.

‎

‎Dr. Lam Akol, a veteran opposition figure and leader of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), was appointed to the unity government under the 2018 peace agreement. 

‎

His dismissal could stir political ripples within the opposition camp, given his influential role in the peace implementation process.

‎

‎The new Minister of Transport, Rizik Zachariah, is expected to prioritize the rehabilitation of major road networks, streamline air and river transport systems, and oversee new infrastructure projects vital to economic recovery and national connectivity.

Thirty Five (35) People Confirmed Dead In Kapoeta Flood.

Governor of Kapoeta Stats Hon. Louis Lobong Lojore confirmed to the media that after a heavy rain in Kapoeta on Tuesday 35 people lost their lives.  The same rain hit various parts of South Sudan like Duk in Jonglei whereby people also died.   Hon. Lobong said that "We lost about 35 people during the heavy rains that hit several counties in the state on 10 June, so this is what happened here."  He added that the flood destroyed people homes and even destroy the bridges.  “We are trying to create awareness among our people to control water-borne diseases,” he said. The flood affected the market in Kapoeta since it cleared all the food store in Kapoeta State. He added.  Finally he is calling out to the humanitarian organization to come and rescue his people plus the government too since many people are dire need of help.  More to come shortly....

Juba - Nimule: Two People Killed and Two Others Injured In A Road Ambush.

Two people were killed, and two others injured in a road ambush along the Juba-Nimule highway.  The travelers were among seven passengers heading to Juba on independence morning yesterday, when the Toyota Noah they were in, came under attack in Orobe village, Lowa Boma. Pageri county commissioner, Emilio Igga says the attackers sprayed their vehicle with bullets at close range.  Igga says the injured were rushed to Nimule health facilities for treatment and security has been stepped up in the area. The incident comes amid increased reports of attempted robberies along the same route. More to come shortly...
