President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Thursday held high-level discussions with South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile in Juba, focusing on accelerating the implementation of the 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement.

‎Mashatile, who also serves as South Africa’s Special Envoy to South Sudan, engaged with government officials, political leaders, and peace stakeholders during his visit, seeking ways to fast-track the peace process and consolidate stability in the country.

‎Speaking after the meeting, South Sudan’s Ambassador to South Africa, Amb. Simon Duku, said the visit aims to deepen political cooperation and bolster support for South Sudan’s peace roadmap.

‎“This engagement is crucial for ensuring a peaceful and democratic transition,” Duku noted, emphasizing the importance of sustained collaboration between Juba and Pretoria.

‎South Africa’s Ambassador to South Sudan, Mahlodi Muofhe, described the talks as cordial and productive, reaffirming that the peace agreement remains the cornerstone of South Sudan’s stability.

‎“The two leaders reaffirmed that full implementation of the 2018 peace deal is essential for lasting peace and national unity,” Muofhe said.

‎Officials highlighted that the meeting also explored areas of mutual economic interest, particularly investment and development cooperation between the two nations.

‎The 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement, signed in Addis Ababa, outlines key milestones such as security reforms, a permanent constitution, and national elections slated for December 2026 all critical to South Sudan’s transition to democracy.

‎The visit by Deputy President Mashatile underscores South Africa’s continued commitment as a peace guarantor, supporting South Sudan’s quest for stability, reconciliation, and sustainable development.
