Speaking to The Associated Press, Randrianirina said he will be sworn in soon, after receiving an invitation from the country’s High Constitutional Court to formalize his assumption of power.
The coup follows weeks of intense, youth-led demonstrations against Rajoelina’s government, which culminated over the weekend when Randrianirina’s elite Capsat unit joined protesters in the capital. The sudden military defection forced Rajoelina to flee the country.

Rajoelina, who has been in power since 2018, condemned the military takeover, calling it “an illegal seizure of power” and urging international partners to reject what he described as a coup against democracy.
The situation in Madagascar remains tense, with reports of continued demonstrations in Antananarivo and uncertainty over how regional and global leaders will respond to the military’s actions.
