Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has appointed Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel as the Chairperson of the reconstituted Committee on Dialogue and the Final Status of Abyei with the Government of Sudan.

According to the Presidential decree announced Friday in Juba, Hon. Pieng Deng Kuol has been named as Deputy Chairperson, alongside several newly appointed members tasked with steering talks aimed at reaching a lasting solution to the disputed Abyei region.

The reconstitution of the committee comes at a critical time as both Juba and Khartoum seek to revive stalled negotiations over the oil-rich border area, which remains one of the key unresolved issues since South Sudan’s independence in 2011.

Dr. Bol Mel, who also chairs the National Economic Cluster, is widely seen as a pragmatic negotiator capable of building consensus.

His appointment signals renewed political will from the South Sudanese government to push for a peaceful and permanent resolution to the Abyei question.

Observers view this move as part of President Kiir’s broader strategy to strengthen diplomacy and regional stability, particularly amid ongoing cooperation talks with Sudan on trade, security, and border management.
