SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River
President Salva Kiir Mayardit has appointed Beny Gideon Mabor as the new Minister of East African Community Affairs, replacing veteran diplomat Deng Alor Kuol.
The appointment was announced through a Republican Decree broadcast on South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Monday evening. The decree did not specify the reasons for the replacement.
Before his elevation to the ministerial post, Beny Gideon Mabor served as the Undersecretary in the same ministry, where he played a key role in advancing South Sudan’s regional integration efforts and strengthening cooperation with East African Community (EAC) member states.
Mabor’s promotion marks a significant generational shift in the ministry’s leadership and is seen as recognition of his long-standing service and institutional experience within the regional bloc.
As Minister, Mabor will be tasked with steering South Sudan’s participation in the EAC integration agenda, including economic harmonization, free movement policies, and cross-border trade facilitation. He is also expected to oversee the country’s ongoing efforts to align domestic policies with EAC standards and commitments.
His predecessor, Deng Alor Kuol, had served as Minister of East African Community Affairs since 2020 and was instrumental in representing South Sudan in key regional summits and policy discussions.
Political analysts view Mabor’s appointment as a strategic move by President Kiir to inject new energy and technical expertise into the ministry, especially as South Sudan seeks to deepen its engagement with the regional bloc amid pressing economic challenges.
The Ministry of East African Community Affairs plays a vital role in ensuring South Sudan’s effective integration into the EAC’s economic, political, and infrastructural frameworks, which are central to the country’s regional cooperation and trade development strategies.
Beny Gideon Mabor’s leadership is expected to focus on strengthening South Sudan’s voice within the EAC, promoting cross-border partnerships, and enhancing the country’s readiness for full participation in regional programs.
