Nasir Trial Adjourned as MP Gatwech Lam Puoch Begins Defense ‎

‎The Special Court handling the Nasir incident has adjourned proceedings until Monday, June 15, after the third accused, MP Gatwech Lam Puoch, began presenting his defense. ‎ ‎Gatwech, a member of the National Legislative Assembly representing Nasir County, rejected allegations linking him to activities related to the Nasir incident.  ‎ He told the court that his actions were part of his constitutional duties as an elected representative and were aimed at reducing tensions in Nasir and Ulang counties. ‎ ‎The lawmaker said a press conference cited by prosecutors was intended to encourage dialogue, address rumors, and help prevent conflict rather than incite violence.  ‎ He maintained that he was fulfilling his responsibility to represent and speak on behalf of his constituents. ‎ ‎Gatwech also argued that the Nasir crisis should be viewed within the wider context of challenges facing the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement, citing concerns raised by various political act...

Governor Dollar Ruot Relocates Office to Nasir to Boost Peace Efforts in Upper Nile ‎

‎Upper Nile State Governor Dollar Ruot has announced the temporary relocation of his office to Nasir County as part of a new strategy to foster peace and strengthen community relations in the state.

‎Speaking after a high-level briefing with Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, Governor Ruot said his decision aims to enhance direct engagement with local communities in Nasir and Ulang, areas that have faced persistent insecurity and intercommunal tensions.

‎“Lasting peace comes through dialogue and presence on the ground. My priority is to listen to the people and work closely with local leaders to address their concerns,” Ruot stated.

‎He also urged the national government to reinforce ongoing peace and development efforts in Upper Nile, emphasizing that stability will pave the way for infrastructure growth and improved livelihoods.

‎The governor’s decision has been welcomed by residents and community elders, who view it as a sign of genuine commitment to reconciliation and local development. 

Many expressed optimism that the governor’s direct presence will help restore trust among divided communities and encourage peaceful coexistence.

‎Governor Dollar Ruot’s move aligns with Vice President Bol Mel’s broader peace outreach across the Upper Nile and Jonglei regions, which seeks to engage grassroots communities and former armed youth in dialogue and peacebuilding initiatives.
