Explosive testimony before the Special Court in Juba has revealed that suspended Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chuol allegedly sent $30,000 to mobilize the White Army militia for an attack on the SSPDF garrison in Nasir, Upper Nile State.
Key Allegations from the Courtroom
Funding the Assault:
Lead investigator Maj. Gen. Basilio Thomas Wani told the court that Puot Kang transferred the funds by air to Nasir.
The money was allegedly split among 15 payams, with each receiving $2,000 to mobilize youth for the attack. One chief reportedly rejected the funds and surrendered his traditional ribbon in protest.
WhatsApp Coordination:
Wani testified that Puot Kang maintained direct contact with the militia via WhatsApp, receiving battlefield updates, casualty reports, and timing instructions.
He further accused Kang of spreading false military information through Radio Miraya, allegedly to mislead the public.
Weapons Procurement:
The investigator claimed Puot Kang sent money to SPLM-IO commander Brig. Gen. Hokdor Chuol for ammunition purchases used in the assault.
Casualties and Leadership:
The March 2025 Nasir attack reportedly left 267 SSPDF soldiers dead, including senior commander Gen. James Majur Dak.
The offensive was allegedly led by Col. Tor Gile Thoan in coordination with SPLM-IO forces.
Defense Pushback & Court’s Next Move
Puot Kang, alongside First Vice President Riek Machar and six others, faces charges of treason, mass murder, terrorism, and destruction of property.
The defense team challenged Wani’s testimony, citing constitutional breaches and violations of privacy laws in how evidence was obtained.
Presiding Judge James Alala Deng adjourned proceedings to October 20, when further witnesses are expected to testify.
