SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Bright Stars Coach Nicolas Dupuis Apologizes to Fans After 5-0 Defeat to Senegal

‎Juba, South Sudan, October 11, 2025.

‎South Sudan national football team head coach Nicolas Dupuis has apologized to fans following the Bright Stars’ heavy 5-0 loss to Senegal in Friday’s international match at Juba National Stadium.

‎Speaking at the post-match press conference, the French tactician admitted the result was painful and disappointing but emphasized that the team remains focused on improvement.

‎“I want to correct some clumsy remarks I made in the heat of the moment after the match,” Dupuis said. “I was deeply affected by our many individual mistakes, though I was happy with how we played in the first half.”

‎Dupuis took full responsibility for the defeat and expressed appreciation to the South Sudan Football Federation (SSFA) for its continued support. 

‎He praised the federation’s efforts to professionalize the national team’s environment, citing improved facilities and accommodation.

‎“We stayed in a superb hotel for the first time that shows how much effort the federation is making,” he added.

‎The coach also apologized to the federation president, the technical team, and the players for the post-match remarks he made out of frustration. 

‎He assured fans that the coaching staff is working to fix the mistakes and strengthen the team ahead of their upcoming fixture against Togo.

‎“Thank you for your loyalty. Together, let’s go for victory against Togo,” Dupuis told supporters, urging them to keep faith in the Bright Stars.

‎Despite the setback, optimism remains within the camp as the players regroup with renewed determination to bounce back in their next international outing.
