The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has issued a serious warning that South Sudan is teetering on the brink of full-scale war.

The warning follows the escalating political tension surrounding the ongoing trial of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and several senior SPLM-IO members, accused over the March 2025 Nasir violence.

According to CEPO, the trial has deepened political divisions, eroded trust in the peace process, and increased the risk of renewed fighting between rival forces.
“South Sudan’s leaders continue to rely on military solutions to political problems,” said Edmund Yakani, CEPO’s Executive Director. “This approach is short-sighted and dangerous. It could push the country back into war.”
Mounting Frustration Among Citizens
Yakani said growing economic hardship and unpaid public workers are fuelling anger across the country.

He noted that while military spending is rising, education, health, and agriculture remain severely underfunded.
“These imbalances are hurting communities and creating resentment,” he said. “People are losing confidence in peaceful change.”
Deepening Humanitarian Crisis
South Sudan continues to grapple with floods, hunger, and insecurity that have displaced thousands.

CEPO warns that a return to war would unleash the worst humanitarian crisis since independence.
The group called on both the government and opposition to reopen political dialogue and restore public trust ahead of next year’s elections.
Call for Regional and Global Support
CEPO urged IGAD, the African Union, and the United Nations to intensify diplomatic pressure on South Sudanese leaders.
“Regional and international actors must not wait until war breaks out,” Yakani warned. “They must act now to preserve peace.”
Analysis
Analysts say CEPO’s warning reflects growing fears that the fragile peace agreement could unravel.

With unpaid soldiers, unresolved security arrangements, and stalled electoral reforms, the risk of violent relapse remains high.
Conclusion
CEPO’s message to South Sudan’s leaders is clear:

Peace must prevail over confrontation.
The organization insists that only inclusive dialogue, justice, and accountability can secure lasting peace for the people of South Sudan.
