Gunfire Erupts in Mayom Between SSPDF and SPLA-IO

‎A brief exchange of gunfire broke out in Mayom County, Unity State, on Tuesday following the arrival of an SPLA-IO unit from Abyei, according to local authorities.

County Commissioner James Chuol Gatluak confirmed that the confrontation occurred between government forces and members of the SPLA-IO who had recently crossed into the area. 

He said the situation quickly calmed after security forces intervened to prevent further escalation.

“It was a misunderstanding between forces no serious casualties were reported,” Gatluak said, assuring residents that calm has been restored in Mayom town.

‎The SPLA-IO unit reportedly moved from Abyei to Mayom as part of a routine troop relocation, but tensions rose after local forces questioned their presence.

Residents described moments of panic as sporadic gunfire rang out in the town before order was restored.

‎Local peace monitors have urged both SSPDF and SPLA-IO commanders to strengthen communication channels to avoid similar incidents, warning that mistrust between rival forces continues to threaten fragile stability in Unity State.

Mayom County has been a frequent flashpoint for clashes between government troops and opposition forces despite the ongoing peace implementation process.
