SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

South Sudan radio stations to host rival political parties for Interviews so as to spread peace messages



Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) RJMEC Deputy Chief of Strategy Dr. Thompson Fontaine, is encouraging the different political and warrying parties in South Sudan to take the advantage of the radio program in order to synthesize the people about peace in South Sudan.



He further urged the journalist in and outside the country to spread the information of peace to the people rather message of hate. After he confirmed the establishment of peace in various parts of South Sudan and that only view areas are still experiencing conflict.



Dr. Thompson did not forget to elaborate more on the importance of radio as a medium of effectively transmitted message to the country. The message is of peace when transmitted through the radio program can easily reach millions of South Sudan.



The revitalized peace agreement which was signed in Ethiopia capital city Addis Ababa on September 12 2018 under the support of the IGAD is responsible for overseeing the peace implementation progress in South Sudan.



One representative from the government site who is also the Chairperson of Media Authority Atong Majok also added that the radio and journalist should not only focus on reporting on the peace message but also to report rape cases too and the rights of rape victims.



The Chairperson of Media Authority Atong Majok also believes that through reported such rape cases. The government might know what is happening and chip in to help the rape victims or any nearby national NGOs will chip in to help.



South Sudan journalist are always subjected to violence sometimes they are intimidated by government agents. They are also at times targeted for assassination. This developing story from the media authority is still eyebrows from the media community.
