SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

President Kiir and the US. ambassador, looked into ways in which South Sudan can achieve a credible, peaceful, free and fair elections come 2024. 


The US. ambassador said that, they discussed with the president the requirements for conducting the 2024 general elections.

The US. diplomat also said that, they discussed about the legal framework that will work for the politicians, civic space as well as the security forces. 


The diplomat further said that, the legal framework can only be achieved by the immediate deployment of the Necessary Unified Forces in the country.

In attendance, was the Director for the United States Institute of Peace, the director accompanied the US diplomat . 


The director said that, the United States Government will work with the government and civil society around the world to prevent and mitigate violent conflicts in the country.

The US. Government is the leading international donor to South Sudan, providing lifesaving humanitarian assistance such as food, nutrition, protection, clean water, and sanitation, as well as essential services such as food, nutrition support, emergency water and sanitation interventions, health care, and education to millions of South Sudanese citizens displaced or otherwise affected since the start of the crisis in December 2013. 


In the year 2022, an estimated 8.9 million South Sudanese need some type of humanitarian assistance, with up to 8 million facing crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity (about 60 percent of the population), making South Sudan one of the most food-insecure countries in the world. South Sudan is one of the most dangerous places in the world for aid workers, with more than 145 killed since 2013.

The United States Government, provides $1 billion annually in humanitarian and development assistance and peacekeeping support to South Sudan. 


The United States Government also supports civil society and independent media to ensure that diverse voices are heard and supports activities in conflict mitigation, trauma awareness, and reconciliation.

The US. government aim is to, restore stability in South Sudan, ending conflicts and addressing the grievances behind them; strengthening core institutions and improving governance transparency processes to make them more inclusive; fighting corruption; and responding to the expectations of the population for essential services and improved livelihoods.


The United States collaborates with multiple United Nations agencies, other donors, and nongovernmental organizations to assist those affected by ongoing violence
