SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Murle and Dinka Bor leaders agree to forceful disarmament of it's youths.

The leaders of Murrle and Dinka Bor had a two days peace conference and has been concluded, the leaders from the two communities agreed to forcefully disarmed their youths. 


Over the years, youths in Jonglei State and GPAA are notoriously known for child abductions, road ambushes, revenge killing and cattle rustling. 


However, the two communities had several peace dialogues on how to prevent violence but innocent parties continue to lose their lives on both sides. 


While addressing the media, GPAA Information Minister, Hon. Abraham Kelang said that, the two communities agreed that the SSPDF to forcefully disarmed their youths. 


“We agreed as the governments from both sides to disarm the youths because they are the ones causing insecurity in our two states,” Kelang said. 


Hon. Kelang said that, GPAA will work hand in hand with the Jonglei leaders to implement the agreed resolutions of the conference. 


Jonglei State, Civil Society Network Chairperson, Bol Deng Bol, doubts wether the peace conference resolutions will be implemented. 


“The idea of disarming youth among other resolutions is a good suggestions But who will implement it?” Bol questioned.


Bol further said that, he preferred the two communities to do something benefiting like, road, education, food and health facilities. 


“It is better for them to do something that will help the two communities to be comfortable – something like services, road, education, food, and health facilities.” Bol said. 


Bol explained that, forceful disarmament was conducted in the past and it ended into a bloody violence, which he doesn't encourage. 


“There were areas were the forceful disarmaments were conducted and it ended with violence. We don’t encourage that,” Bol explained. 


Finally, Bol said that, the youths need to be synthesized firsthand inorder for them to understand the policies. 


“We need these youth to be engaged first, and until they understand the polices and also see opportunities coming after their guns are collected.” Bol said.
