Nasir Trial Adjourned as MP Gatwech Lam Puoch Begins Defense ‎

‎The Special Court handling the Nasir incident has adjourned proceedings until Monday, June 15, after the third accused, MP Gatwech Lam Puoch, began presenting his defense. ‎ ‎Gatwech, a member of the National Legislative Assembly representing Nasir County, rejected allegations linking him to activities related to the Nasir incident.  ‎ He told the court that his actions were part of his constitutional duties as an elected representative and were aimed at reducing tensions in Nasir and Ulang counties. ‎ ‎The lawmaker said a press conference cited by prosecutors was intended to encourage dialogue, address rumors, and help prevent conflict rather than incite violence.  ‎ He maintained that he was fulfilling his responsibility to represent and speak on behalf of his constituents. ‎ ‎Gatwech also argued that the Nasir crisis should be viewed within the wider context of challenges facing the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement, citing concerns raised by various political act...

Jonglei State, two high ranking SPLM-IO generals have defected and joined the SPLM ruling party, the generals all hails from Jonglei State. 


The defection of the two SPLM-IO high ranking generals only indicates a significant shift in the unpredictable political landscape of Jonglei State.

Namely, Major. General Michael Wal Nyap and Major General Samuel Both Tap, they made the declaration of switching allegiance on Friday in the town of Waat in Nyirol County. 


Maj. Gen. Michael Wal, acting SPLM-IO commander in Jonglei State while speaking to the media said that, the two general made the decision on Friday to join the government.

“Major-General Both and I defected along with 300 soldiers to the SSPDF. We feel there is no reason to remain in the bush suffering under trees while Riek Machar has been in Juba for the last six years without even thinking about us,” Gen. Michael said. 


“Again, SSPDF is where I had left from as a brigadier-general, and it is my right to rejoin Bilpam for the sake of peace.”

On the other hand, Maj. Gen. Samuel Both a senior SPLM-IO officer said that, the defection of the two generals was a gesture of goodwill and peace. 


“Why would we remain in Juba when Riek is in Juba? So we must be in Juba, where the peace deal is being implemented. We are for peace, so we left without a single shot.”  Maj. Gen. Both said.

Lt. Gen. Daniel Koang Chuol, the sector commander said that, the defected generals abandoned his command. 


Lt. Gen. Daniel Koang Chuol, further said that, the sons of the two generals who defected refused to defect and follow them, because they had no reason to join their fathers.

He also said that, the entire community is not standing with them, he believed that they had been paid to cause confusion in the region. 


“Gen. Michael Wal defected from one of our headquarters in Motot to Waat with only seven of his relatives plus Gen. Both. Their sons even refused to defect with them because they had no cause. Some individuals paid them to create confusion, but the entire community is not standing with them. There was no fighting because I believe we are in the same government but only that we are waiting for the security arrangements to be implemented fully,” Lt. Gen. Koang said.
