SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

President Salva Kiir Mayardiit today on Friday, removed the head of the Presidential Medical Unit in an order announced on SSBC. 


The work of the Presidential Medical Unit is to, cater for the medical needs of the office of the president staffs.

The Presidential Medical Unit, is also mandated to provide medical care and attention to President Kiir. 


The decree, also announced the appointment of the new Presidential Medical Unit head as Dr. Mayen Machut Achiek who replaced Dr. Andrew Akon Akec.

Dr. Mayen, served previously as the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Health and now he will be leading in ensuring the president and all the presidential staffs medical needs are taken care of. 


President Kiir, also appointed Dr. Andrew Akon Akec, the former head of Presidential Medical Unit as the technical advisor to the National Health Ministry.

Again, President Salva Kiir Mayardiit did not explain as to why he made the changes. 


Most recently, Dr. Mayen has been named to the prestigious position of Minister of Health by the South Sudanese government. 


Dr. Mayen, previously acted as Head of the Department of Surgery & Medical Education, College of Medicine, University of Juba. 


Dr. Mayen, has also served as Senior Consultant Surgeon at the Juba Teaching Hospital in South Sudan. In his advisory capacity to GEMS Development Foundation, Dr. Mayen also served as the medical lead, dealing with GEMS programs in the country, particularly with respect to teaching students, as well as working with patients under these programs.


Dr. Mayen also, served as a Senior Fellow in General Laparoscopic & Colorectal Surgery at Kings College Hospital, University of London, UK. He was also a Lecturer in General Surgery and MBBS Examiner in London during that time.


Education for Dr. Mayen includes a BS in Pharmacy, University of Khartoum; MBBS, Faculty of Medicine, University of Gezira, Sudan; FRCS, The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, UK; Postgraduate Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery, Strassbourg, France; Advanced University Lecturing & Higher Education, University of London. During the 1990’s, Dr. Achiek received additional training at Wrexham Hospital, Wales, UK.
