SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

President Ordered Law Enforcement Agencies To Investigate And Arrest The Culprits Responsible For The Killing Of 27 Civilians In Kajo-Keji County

South Sudan President as ordered all law enforcement agencies to work hand in hand in arresting those responsible for the cruesome murder of 27 Civilians in Kajo-Keji County. 

In a statement released to the media today on Wednesday, president Kiir said their is no words to explain his sorrow for the incident that happened in Kajo-Keji County.

“There is no justifiable explanation for this uncalled violence at the time when the leaders of the two communities have initiated processes of returning cattle to their areas of origin,” the president said. “It is on this basis that I strongly condemn the actions of the perpetrators of these crimes and urgently direct the law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate what took place in Kajo-Keji.”-Presient Kiir said. 

He further said that: “These investigations must not amount to nothing, they must aim at holding the instigators and perpetrators of these heinous crimes accountable for their actions.” 

The president said that he is deeply disturbed and saddened by the unfortunate incident that happened. 

“It came when at a time when the entire world was watching our preparations for welcoming Pope Francis and the other two prominent religious Christian leaders for a historic ecumenical pilgrimage of peace to our country.” 

He finally send a word of condolences to the family of the deceased and promised them to do everything possible inorder for the culprits to be apprehended.

“To the grieving communities, I convey my heartfelt condolences to you and urge you not to allow the appeal of revenge for your losses to drive you to commit further acts of violence,” Kiir counseled. “I am fully aware of how hard it is to cope with tragedies of this nature, but I maintain that you leave this to authorities to resolve both the root causes of this issue as well as use the full force of the law to hold the culprits accountable.”
